Code of Conduct by Kristine Smith is a well-written and colorful book. The protagonist, Jani, is a very strong and well developed character and is not the stereotypical sci-fi hero.I found the writing to be very descriptive, refreshingly so. The author went to great pains to help you feel, hear, see, touch and smell what was happening. She also went into great depths to help you understand the characters.
However, the book had me perplexed. I've not read a book written in the style of this book. The personal reflections and thoughts that were brought out in the midst of conversations left me confused at first. They seemed to detract from the flow of the book by forcing you to stop and consider the thoughts and ruminations of the primary character, which often ran contrary to the conversation at the moment. Then you would have to immerse yourself back into the conversation. I had to stop and reread paragraphs for awhile. After I became used to the style it wasn't such a distraction.

I found Jani, who was "augmented" to be very weak and in spite of her augmentation and not in control of it. In fact, I never fully understood what the augmentation was meant to do. The technology was very advanced, to the point no one could tell she was augmented, yet there was no data link, no communications link. At times I was frustrated because the movement of data and information seemed to be far behind even our own capabilities today.
I appreciated the strength of Jani, even in the face of overwhelming odds, to do the right thing and to see her mission through. She was obviously far more than just a records clerk. She had the capabilities of a spy. Where that came from, we're not told.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and I am currently reading the second in the series.

An interesting heroine and a plot that is actually a murder investigation more-so than typical sci-fi, but I found the reading difficult. I was halfway through the novel before I began to figure out some of the background and terminology. I had been tempted to quit reading a couple times by then, but I persevered. I don't mind being challenged and growing along with the storyline, but this one is tough going. There were also quite a few serendipitous events to make the plot functional, where someone just happened to stumble upon a fact or or managed to pull off some inexplicable stunt to move the story forward. And the purpose and capability of the "augmentation" that Jani Kilian and others in the book have remains a mystery to me even after finishing it.
I gave this one three stars because it of its creative view of a political future and the dark but strong lead character (Jani Kilian), but I won't be reading the sequel.
Military science fiction with an interesting twist. Rather than the usual type, the heroine Jani Killian is a documents technician, trained to spot inconsistencies in paperwork. Her brain augment helps her in combat situations, but has a whole host of psychological and physiological side effects conveyed quite well. But eighteen years ago, on an alien world, Jani Killian did the unthinkable. Escaping barely with her life, doctors remade her until she was barely recognizable. A good chunk of the book is how her body is adapting (or not) to all those changes. Some she understands, and some not.
Killian discovers the hard way about trying to outrun that past, when an old flame asks her to investigate some touchy political and personal affairs. Killian is relentless in turning up the truth, but she also finds out what happen to her eighteen years before. Mixed into the Earth political intrigue is the reopening of diplomatic contact with the idomeni culture and how that ties into Killian's past and future.
Having lived near DC all my life, I appreciated the levels of bureaucratic finagling Killian goes through trying to solve her paper mystery.
I also appreciated the new covers for the re-released ebooks from BookView Cafe showing Jani Killian. Much better than a big space gun and a body part, because they either couldn't find the right model or didn't think it'd sell well.
Great book if you like being lost. You spend half your time trying to figure out vague references to events and tech that happened in a different time using jargon that isn't explained. I have to admit I did like the characters and once some of the twists are revealed and some of the ends tied up, I did enjoy the book.
When I started reading it, I looked at the cover to make sure it was the first book in the series because it seemed like it was a sequel to a previous book. (In , rather than pages, I have percent completed) It was only when I reached 46% completed that I finally understood what happened previously. Also, there were many pages where I read the page, understood each word, but did not understand what happened.
It was very hard to complete the book but I gave it 2 stars rather than 1 star because I believe that if you do finish it, the second book in the series would be easier to understand. I however, will not be continuing this series.
